I'm around 280 lbs and have been through two mattresses in three years. Both developed deep body impressions and sagging within months. A salesperson at a local store mentioned mattresses with thicker gauge coils (like 12.5 or 13 gauge) might hold up better for heavier sleepers. Anyone actually tried one? I'm curious about long-term durability and whether they feel overly firm. Not looking for generic advice, hoping to hear from people with real experience.
Anyone tried a mattress with extra thick coils
I haven't tried extra thick coils specifically, but I've had good luck wiith a mattress that uses a high coil count and thicker wire. Mine is a hybrid with 13 gauge coils and it's held up for about two years so far. No sagging yet. It's definitely on the firm side though, so if you like plush you might need a topper.
What brand was that hybrid? I'm in a similar weight range and looking for options.
It's a local brand called SleepCraft, not sure if they sell nationally. I can check the label when I get home if you want the the exact model.
That would be helpful, thanks. I'm mostly concerned about whether the thicker coils actually prevent the sagging or if it's just marketing.
I'm about 300 lbs and I bought a mattress with 12.5 gauge coils about a year ago. It's been holding up well so far, but I did add a 2-inch latex topper for comfort. The coils themselves seem sturdy. One thing I noticed is that the edge support is much better than my old mattress.
Do you remember the coil count? I've heard that thicker coils often mean fewer coils total, which can affect support.
I think it's around 800 coils in a queen. Not super high, but the gauge is thick. I was worried about fewer coils but it feels supportive enough.
I've been researching this too. From what I've read, thicker coils (lower gauge number) are more durable for heavier people, but they can make the mattress feel firmer. Also, the quality of the foam layers matters just as much—cheap foam will break down even with good coils.
That's a good point about the foam. My last mattress had thick coils but the foam on top compressed quickly. Maybe I need to look for better quality comfort layers too.
Checked the label. It's the SleepCraft Haven model. It has 13 gauge coils and a 3-inch memory foam top. The foam did soften a bit but no body impressions. I'm about 250 lbs.
Thanks for the info. I'll look into that model. Has anyone tried the Big Fig mattress? It's designed for heavier sleepers and supposedly has thick coils.
I haven't tried Big Fig, but I've heard mixed things. Some say it's great, others say it sleeps hot. I think it uses 13 gauge coils though.
Big Fig is on my shortlist. The price is steep but if it lasts longer it might be worth it. I'm tired of replacing mattresses every two years.
One thing to consider is the warranty. Some companies void the warranty if you don't use a specific foundation. With thicker coils, the mattress can be heavier, so you might need a sturdier frame.
Good reminder about the foundation. I hadn't thought about the weight of the mattress itself. My current frame is pretty basic.
Yeah, a heavy mattress needs a solid base. I had to reinforce my bed frame with extra slats. It's something people don't always mention.
