Hybrid Beds

I can't get comfortable on my new hybrid mattress

So I'm about 280lbs and finally upgraded from a beat-up 10-year-old innerspring to a hybrid (coils + memory foam) that a salesperson promised would be "perfect for bigger sleepers." Two weeks in and my lower back is killing me , it feels like I'm sleeping in a shallow trench. Anyone else had this happen? Did it eventually break in, or did I just get sold a lemon?

Two weeks is nothing, honestly. Most hybrids take a solid month to soften up, especially the foam layers. Give it time before you panic.

Or you got sold a mattress that's too soft for your weight. Salespeople love the word "hybrid" like it magically fixes everything. What's the firmness rating?

MidnightSnacker

Dude same thing happened to me. 260 here and the "medium" hybrid I bought was basically a hammock after a month. Returned it and went extra firm. No regrets ngl.

Extra firm isn't always the answer though. Too firm and you get pressure points on hips and shoulders. It's a balance.

SlinkyDink

Right, but a trench means the support layer is collapsing. That's different from "a bit too soft." If you're sinking through the foam into the coils unevenly, no amount of waiting fixes that.

Have you checked if your foundation is the problem? Slats too far apart or a box spring that's flexing can make any mattress feel saggy.

It's on a solid platform bed frame, so I don't think that's it. Firmness is supposedly "medium-firm." Starting to think I should've gone firmer.

MidnightSnacker

Medium-firm is marketing speak for "we won't tell you the actual ILD." Check the return window. Seriously.

Also rotate it 180 degrees and see if the trench follows you. If it does, it's you. If it stays put, it's the mattress. Cheap diagnostic.

grumpy_cat_lady

That rotate trick is clever. Filing that away for later.

Honestly the whole "break-in period" thing is half true and half excuse. If it's actively hurting your back After two weeks, that's a bad match, not a break-in issue.

SlinkyDink

Seconding this. Discomfort while adjusting is normal. Pain is not.

PixelatedOwl

Checked the return policy — 100 nights, but there's a restocking fee. Gonna try the rotation thing this weekend and then decide. Appreciate the input, even the snarky bits.
