Lately I've been waking up multiple times a night with my arms completely numb, like dead weight. I'm a side sleeper and about 250 lbs. It's starting to freak me out. Anyone else deal with this? Is it my mattress or something else?
Why do I keep waking up with numb arms
Probably your pillow is too flat and your arm gets trapped under your body. Been there.
Numb arms? Congrats, you're a side sleeper with a mattress that's too soft. Your shoulder sinks in, your arm gets pinned and boom—dead limb. Get a firmer mattress or a thicker pillow. Or just embrace the tingly wake-up call as a fun new hobby.
I had the same issue. Turned out my old memory foam was sagging in the middle. Replaced it with a hybrid and it stopped within a week.
Could also be your arm position. Do you sleep with your arm under your pillow? That cuts off circulation.
Happens to me when I sleep on my side without flipping. My arm goes numb and then I wake up and it's all pins and needles. I just flip over and it goes away. Not a big deal. But if it's happening a lot maybe see a doc?
What mattress do you have? That's the first question.
It's a 10-year-old memory foam from Costco. Definitely has some body impressions.
Yeah, a decade-old memory foam is basically a coffin for your arms. Time for a new bed, my friend.
Ten years is a long run. If it's sagging, your spine isn't aligned and your shoulders are taking the brunt. A firmer mattress with good edge support could help.
Also try sleeping with a body pillow. Keeps you from rolling onto your arm.
Or you might have thoracic outlet syndrome. Not to scare you, but numb arms at night can be a ne rve thing. Maybe worth a doctor visit if a new mattress doesn't fix it.
I second the body pillow suggestion. I'm a bigger guy too and that helped me stop waking up with dead arms.
If you're 250 lbs, you probably need a mattress rated for higher weight. Most standard foams aren't built for that and they break down faster. Look for something with a denser core.
Or just amputate. Problem solved. (Kidding. Sort of.)
Alright, I'll try a body pillow first and start shopping for a firmer mattress. The doctor thing is probably a good idea if it keeps up. Thanks, all.
Let us know what you ennd up getting. I'm curious.
