Has anyone tried a mattress with zoned support

I keep seeing ads for mattresses with zoned support (firmer in the middle, softer at the ends). I'm about 260 lbs and mostly a side sleeper. Does the zoning actually help with hip pressure or is it just marketing? Looking for real experiences.

Zoned support was a game changer for me. I'm 280 and the firmer middle keeps my hips from sinking too deep. But I tried a cheap one first and it was useless. The good ones have a gradual transition, not just a hard band.

Honestly, most zoning is just a foam layer with a few cuts. At your weight, you might be better off with a latex hybrid. Zoning only matters if thw zones align with your body.

I'm 300 lbs and side sleeper. Tried a zoned memory foam and it felt like sleeping on a taco. The middle was too firm and my shoulders got wrecked. Switched to a plain firm mattress and it's better. YMMV.

^^ this is why you gotta try before buying. What works for One heavyweight is a nightmare for another.

I'm only 190 but my partner is 250. We got a zonred hybrid and it's been great for both of us. The softer shoulder area helps me and the firmer middle supports him. But we spent a lot.

Zoned support? More like zoned marketing. Just get a firm mattress and a topper if you need softness.

Interesting mix of opinions. GrumpyGus, have you actually tried a zoned one? I'm curious if your opinion is from experience or just skepticism.

GrumpyGus

Tried two. Both felt weirdly uneven. Maybe I'm just too picky.

I have a zoned latex mattress from SleepOnLatex.I'm 230 and it's been good. The zoning is subtle, not like a brick in the middle. But I think for heavier folks, the quality of the foam matters more than the zones.

SleepOnLatex doesn't have zoning though? I thought they were uniform.

They have a zoned option now. It's called 'zoned support' but it's just a different core. I could be wrong, but mine feels slightly firmer in the middle.

I've been through 5 mattresses in 3 years (don't ask). Zoned support is one of those things that sounds great but is very dependent on your body. For heavy side sleepers, the key is enough pressure relief at the shoulder and hip. Zoning can help if the transition is gradual and the base is supportive. But many brands just slap a firmer foam strip in the middle and call it a day. Look for detailed specs on the zone transition.

MattressMaven, what mattress did you end up with? I'm curious.

MattressMaven

A DIY latex build. Cheaper and I could customize the zones myself. Not for everyone though

curiouscoyote

DIY latex sounds intense. I'm leaning towards trying a zoned hybrid from a store with a good return policy. At least I can test it for a month.

Good call. Just make sure you rotate it regularly, zoning can wear unevenly.
