Is a 12 inch mattress enough for someone over 250 lbs

I'm about 265 lbs and looking at a 12-inch hybrid mattress. The specs say it supports up to 300 lbs per side, but I'm worried the thickness might not be enough for proper support. Has anyone around my weight used a 12-inch mattress long-term? I'd appreciate any real-world experiences.

12 inches can work, but it really depends on the coil gauge and foam density. For 250+, you want at least 13-14 gauge coils and high-density foam (1.8 lb/ft³ or higher). A cheap 12-inch might feel fine at first but break down quickly.

I'm 280 and slept on a 12-inch hybrid for about a year. It was okay at first, but I started waking up with lower back pain around month 10. The comfort layers compressed too much. Ended up going 14 inches with a firmer base.

Not sure thickness is the main factor. You can have a 10-inch mattress that's super supportive if built right. Look at the support core thickness, not just total height.

ThunderRoll, what brand are you considering? That makes a big difference.

Agree with gizmo_gal. Also check if the mattress is rated for your weight. Many 12-inch hybrids re only rated to 250 per person.

I should add that my old 12-inch had 2 inches of memory foam on top, which probably contributed to the sagging. A latex or polyfoam comfort layer might hold up better.

I'm 230 and my 12-inch is fine after 2 years. But I'm lighter. For over 250, I'd lean toward 13 or 14 inches just for the extra support layer.

What about edge support? Thicker mattresses often have better edge support, which matters if you sit on the edge.

gizmo_gal

Edge support is a separate spec. Don't assume a thicker mattress automatically has better edge support. Check for reinforced edges.

I've seen 12-inch mattresses with a 6-inch coil unit and 6 inches of foam. That's not enough support for heavy sleepers. Ideally yoi want at least 8 inches of coils.

PrairieWind

NightOwl_42 makes a good point. The coil height matters more than total thickness. A 12-inch with 8-inch coils is better than a 14-inch with 6-inch coils.

ThunderRoll

Thanks for the input. I was looking at the DreamCloud and Saatva Classic, both 12-inch. I'll check the coil gauge and density specs more closely.
