I'm about 280 lbs and my current mattress is a cheapo from Amazon that's about 3 years old. It's got a visible dip in the middle and I wake up with lower back pain every morning. My question is: do I need to look specifically for 'heavy duty' mattresses, or do I just need to buy a higher quality mattress in general? Every time I search online I get overwhelmed with brands claiming to be 'for heavy sleepers' and I can't tell if it's marketing or real.
Do I need a special mattress or just a better one
At 280 you're definitely in the range where 'special' starts to matter. Not necessarily a niche brand, but you need something with a high-density foam core or a coil system with a higher gauge. A cheap Amazon mattress is basically a disposable item at that weight.
Honestly just get a better one. 'Heavy sleeper' mattresses are often just firmer mattresses with a markup. Look for a good warranty and check the density of the foam. If it's under 1.8 lb/ft³ it's gonna sag.
I went down this rabbit hole last year. The short version: you need both. A better mattress that isn't built for higher weights will still fail early. Look at the coil gauge (12.5 or lower is good) and foam density. Brands like Titan or Big Fig are specifically for bigger folks, but there are also standard brands with heavy-duty models.
Thanks, that's helpful. I hadn't thought about coil gauge. Is there a certain price point where it stops being a gimmick and starts being legit?
Lol @ 'heavy sleeper' mattresses. i'm 250 and I've had good luck with a plain extra-firm innerspring from a local store. Cost me $600 and it's been 5 years with no sag. The online 'specialty' ones wanted $1500+.
The $1500 ones usually have better return policies and longer warranties. That's part of what you're paying for. But if you're willing to gamble, a firm traditional mattress can work.
Just put a sheet of plywood under it. Problem solved.
Plywood works for a while but kills pressure relief. You'll just shift the pain to your shoulders and hips.
Also check the warranty terms. Many 'heavy sleepEr' mattresses have a weight limit clause that voids the warranty if you're over a certain weight, which is ironic. Read the fine print.
Good call on the warranty. I'll look into that. Any specific models under $1000 that people here have actually tried?
I tried the Titan Luxe and it was decent but too firm for side sleeping. If you're a back sleeper it might be fine. They have a 120-night trial so you can bail if it sucks.
Check Costco. They have a few heavy-duty options and their return policy is unbeatable. No questions asked even after a year.
