I'm about 275 lbs and I sweat through the night on my current memory foam mattress. It's only two years old and already has a body impression. I need something that won't turn into a heat trap and can handle my weight without sagging. Any real recommendations from people in similar situations? I don't want to waste another $1500.
What's the best mattress if you sleep hot and weigh over 250
I'm 280 and sleep hot. I switched to a latex mattress with a wool topper and it made a huge difference. Latex sleeps cooler than memory foam in my experience, and the wool helps with moisture. It wasn't cheap but it's held up well for three years so far.
Have you looked into hybrid mattresses? The coils help with airflow and support heavier sleepers. I'm 260 and my hybrid with a breathable cover has beenn good. Also consider a mattress with a higher density foam base.
TinfoilCactus, what brand of latex did you go with? And did you find it too firm at first?
I went with Sleep On Latex, medium firmness. It was firm for the first couple weeks but I got used to it. Their customer service was helpful with the weight question too.
I'm 310 and I've had good luck with a basic innerspring mattress from a local factory. No foam at all all. It's not fancy but it doesn't sleep hot and it was under $800. Might be worth checking local manufacturers instead of big brands.
Latex is a solid choice but if you want to stay under $1500, look at hybrids with pocket coils and a thin layer of cooling gel foam. Just make sure the coil gauge is heavy-duty. I'm 265 and my WinkBed has been good for two years. It does sleep a bit warm on really hot nights though.
PineconeSleeper, how's the edge support on the WinkBed? I've been considering it but I sit on the edge a lot.
Edge support is decent, not amazing. It's fine for sitting but you can tell it's not as firm as the center. For the price it's acceptable.
I'd avoid anything with a lot of memory foam, even the cooling gel stuff. It eventually breaks down and sleeps hot. A latex hybrid or a traditional coil mattress with a natural fiber topper is probably your best bet. Also, a wool mattress pad can help with temperature regulation.
Thanks for the suggestions. I Think I'll check out Sleep On Latex and maybe a local innerspring option. The wool topper idea sounds worth trying too.
One more thing: make sure whatever you get has a good return policy. Latex can feel different than you expect, and with your weight you want to be able to send it back if it doesn't work out.
Agreed on the return policy. Also, give it at least a month before deciding. My first week on latex I thought I made a mistake, but by week three it felt right.
