My partner and I are both on the heavier side (around 300 and 260). We need a new mattress and money is tight. Every salesperson tells us cheap mattresses will sag within a year for us. Is that true or just a sales pitch? Anyone here had a budget mattress hold up with two heavy sleepers? Looking for real experiences, not marketing.
Can a cheap mattress really last with two heavy people
Honestly it depends on what you mean by cheap. A $300 memory foam from Amazon probably won't last. But a basic innerspring from a local factory can be fine if the coil gauge is heavy enoug.
We are about 280 and 240. Bought a $500 hybrid two years ago and it's already got visible dips where we sleep. Not terrible yet but I wouldn't buy it again.
What's your budget?
Trying to stay under $700 for a queen.
Under $700 is doable if you skip the big brands. Look for something with a high coil count and at least 2 inches of dense foam on top. Avoid anything that says 'plush' or 'pillow top' because those break down faster under weight.
I disagree with the coil count thing. Too many coils can mean thinner wire. You want fewer, thicker coils for heavy people. My grandfather was a mattress guy and he always said heavy folks need gauge 12 or lower
No mattress under $700 is going to last more than 3-4 years with that combined weight. Just accept that and plan to replace it. Better than spending $2000 and still having it sag.
Pixel drifter that's grim but probably realistic. We rotate ours every three months and it helps a little.
Have you lookd at latex? Even a cheap latex hybrid might hold up better. But I haven't tried one myself so take that with a grain of salt.
Latex is good but cheap latex usually isn't real latex. Be careful.
We bought a used hotel mattress from a liquidator for $250. It's a Sealy with a really thick coil unit. Two years in and it's still flat. Not pretty but it works.
Used hotel mattresses are a gamble. You don't know what's been on them.
Fair point. We put a waterproof encasement on it immediately. No regrets so far.
To the OP, check if there's a local mattress factory near you. They often sell direct for less and will tell you honestly which models are built for heavier people. The one near me has a 'heavy duty' line that's $600 for a queen.
Didn't think about local factories. There is one about an hour from here. I'll call them and ask about coil gauge and foam density. Thanks for for the reality check on lifespan too.
One more thing, get a mattress protector and a solid bed frame with slats close together. A cheap mattress on a weak frame will fail faster no matter what.
