Adjustable Beds

Anyone using an adjustable bed with a heavy-duty mattress

So my back has been acting up and the doc suggested an adjustable base. Problem is I'm 280lbs and my current mattress is a cheap memory foam that already has a body impression. I keep seeing people say adjustable beds 'aren't for big guys' but that seems outdated. Anyone actually running a heavy-duty mattress on an adjustable frame? What did you go with and did it hold up or start sagging at the hinge points?

Following. I'm 6'3" 310 and every salesperson I talk to gives me a different answer. One swears the base is fine, next one says I'll void the warranty if I put anything over 250 on it.

The weight limit thing is usually about the base motors, not the mattress. Check the base spec sheet, most decent ones are rated 600+ lbs these days. The mattress is the part that gets weird at the bend.

It's not really 'not for big guys' anymore, that's just old info floating around. My husband is around 260 and we've had a latex hybrid on an adjustable base for about three years. No sagging at the hinge. The key was making sure the mattress was actually compatible with an adjustable base, some innersprings just aren't meant to fold.

Define 'holding up.' My brother in law is a big dude and his foam mattress got a permanent crease at the bend after like a year. He sleeps with the head up all the time though, which probably doesn't help.

Yeah sleeping at an incline every night will compress the foam at the hinge faster. If you're mostly flat, and just raise it to watch TV it's a different story.

Good point on the incline thing, I'd probably be using it raised a fair bit for reflux so that's a concern.

Go with a pocket coil hybrid over pure foam. The coils handle the weight and the hinge stress way better. I'm not small and mine's been fine two years in.

Any specific brands or is that against the rules lol

I don't wanna sound like an ad, just look for something that explicitly says adjustable-base compatible and has a decent weight rating on the spec page. If a manufacturer won't publish the number that's your answer.

Also check the warranty language. Some of them will void it if you use an adjustable base that isn't their own brand, which is a racket.

Honestly if your back is that bad get The base first and worry about the mattress after. You can cheap out on the frame but not the mattress, or the other way around, pick one lol

This thread has been more useful than three store visits. Still no consensus on foam vs coil though.

Appreciate all this. Leaning toward a hybrid and checking the weight rating before I buy anything. Will report back if it creases at the hinge like Teddy's brother in law.
