Anyone else have trouble getting out of a soft mattress

I'm about 280 lbs and recently got a plush memory foam mattress. It feels great getting into bed but when I try to get up in the morning I sink so deep it's a real struggle to push myself out. My old innerspring was firm and I never had this problem. Is this just how soft mattresses are for heavier people, or is something wrong with mine?

Yeah that's a common issue with soft foam and heavier sleepers. You sink in and the foam doesn't push back enough. I'm around 250 and had a similar experience. Firm is usually better for support but it's a tradeoff.

How long have you had it? Sometimes there's a break-in period but if it's already too soft it probably won't get better.

I'm 300+ and I avoid plush mattresses entirely for this reason. The sinking feeling makes me feel trapped. A medium-firm hybrid with coils has been the only thing that works for me. Memory foam alone just gives out under my weight tbh.

Could be the foundation too. If it's on a flexible slat base or a box spring that's worun out, it'll feel mushier than it should. Putting it on a solid platform might help a little.

Not sure why people are surprised. Soft mattresses are soft. If you weigh more you're going to sink more. That's just physics.

That's a bit dismissive. The issue is that a lot of mattresses marketed as supportive still bottom out for heavier folks. It's not just about soft vs firm. It's about the quality and thickness of the support layers.

I agree. I had a plush hybrid that was fine for a year then started sagging where I slept. Getting out became harder and harder. Turned out the foam layer was compressed. Mattress shopping for heavier sleepers is frustrating because most showroom models feel different after a few months.

Could you add a firm topper? Like a thin layer of high-density foam? Might firm up the surface without replacing the whole thing.

Kestrel_Road

A topper can help but if the base foam is already too soft it might just delay the sink. Worth a try though before buying a new mattress.

I still think it's overcomplicating things. If you can't get out of it, it's the wrong mattress. Return it if you can.
