Would you spend more for a mattress with stronger coils

I'm around 270 lbs and currently on a cheap pocket coil mattress that's already sagging after 1.5 years. I see options with thicker gauge coils and higher coil counts for $400-$700 more. Is the upgrade actually worth it for a heavy sleeper, or is it mostly marketing? Looking for experiences from people who've owned both.

I’d pay more if the coil gauge is genuinely thicker, like 12.5 vs 13.5. That’s a real durability difference for heavier folks. But coil count alone means nothing.

MossyBrick

Went from a 13.5 gauge to a 12.5 gauge and the difference was obvious after a year. The The cheaper one had visible dips where I sat up. The stronger one still looks flat. I’d spend the extra again, assuming the return policy is decent.

What brands are you looking at? Some companies just add more coils without changing wire thickness, which doesn’t help much.

TundraTiger

Agree with DriftwoodOwl. Also check the edge support. Coils near the perimeter matter more than total co unt for bigger sleepers.

Bought a $300 basic coil mattress two years ago. I weigh 290 and it started squeaking and dipping by month eight. Just replaced it with a $850 hybrid with heavier coils. Too early to say for sure, but it feels sturdier and doesn't bottom out when I roll over. At your weight, I'd say the upgrade is worth it.

Thanks, that's helpful. I was looking at a few models but the specs often don't list gauge clearly. Do you all ask the company directly for that info? I'm leaning toward spending more now, but I want to make sure I'm comparing the right thing.

Yes, email support and ask for coil gauge and density. If they can’t answer, that tells you something. Also look for a warranty that doesn’t prorate too fast.

DriftwoodOwl

MossyBrick brings up a good point about warranties. Many cover sagging only after 1.5 inches, which is a lot at your weight. Check the fine print before paying extra.

If you can try one in a store, lie on it for a solid 15 minutes. Coil strength isn’t always obvious in the first two minutes.
