I'm a bigger guy and bought a hybrid mattress about 5 months ago. It felt firm at first, but now it has developed a noticeable dip where I sleep. Is this normal? It feels softer and less supportive. I weigh around 280 lbs. Is there anything I can do?
Why does my mattress get softer after a few months
Most foam softens over time, especially with heavier sleepers. It's called foam fatigue. But 5 months seems fast for a dip. What brand?
My wife and I had a similar issue with a memory foam mattress mattress. It softened up after about 6 months. The company said it was normal break-in. We ended up replacing it after a year.
It's a Sealy hybrid. I rotate it every couple months. The dip is mostly on my side, not the middle.
Have you checked the foundation? A weak zlat or box spring can cause sagging that feels like softening. Also, some mattresses have a break-in period where they soften a bit, but a visible dip might be a warranty claim.
That's a good point about the foundation. I had a similar problem and it turned out my box spring was failing. Replaced it and the mattress felt firmer again.
Foam softens due to heat and pressure. Heavier sleepers generate more heat and pressure, so it happens faster. A latex mattress might hold up better for you netx time.
Also, make sure you're not using a memory foam topper. Those can make it feel softer over time.
No topper. The foundation is a solid platform bed. I'll check the slats though. Thanks for the suggestions.
If it's a visible dip, measure it. Most warranties cover dips over 1.5 inches. Take photos and contact the manufacturer. They might replace it.
also, consider your bed frame. If it has a center support, make sure it's properly adjusted. Sometimes the center support sags, causing the mattress to dip.
