Why do mattress companies hide their weight limits

Been shopping for a new bed and I'm around 280 lbs. Nothing on the big brands' websites mentions a weight limit. You have to dig through warranty PDFs or call support. Why is this info so buried? Feels like they're hiding something.

Because if they printed 'supports up to 250 lbs' on the box, half their customers would realize they're outside the spec and return the thing. Easier to stay quiet and let people find out when it sags in a year.

I work in retail bedding (not naming brands). The limits are often there in the fine print of the warranty. They're not really 'hiding' it so much as not advertising it. Most shoppers never read the warranty until they need to file a claim.

It's the same reason airlines don't put the seat Width on the ticket. They want you to buy first, ask questions later.

Actually, several brands do list list limits on their sites—you just have to open the product specs tab or the FAQ. I've seen 250, 300, even 500 lb limits clearly stated for some models. Maybe you're looking at the wrong places?

I checked the specs tab on three major brands before posting. One had a limit buried in a PDF, the other two had nothing. So it's inconsistent at best.

Call me when they start putting weight limits on the mattress tag like they do for ladders. Until then i'm assuming my 300 lb self is a stress test.

The real issue is that 'weight limit' is fuzzy anyway. A 250-lb person sleeping alone in the middle is different from two 200-lb people in the same spot. Companies probably keep it vague to avoid liability for edge cases.

That's true, but they still know the tested load. If you call support and ask directly, they'll usually tell you. It's just not published because they don't want to scare off lighter buyers with with a low number that doesn't apply to them.

Also, a lot of 'limits' come from the foundation, not the mattress. Put a heavy person on a cheap box spring and it's the frame that fails first. The mattress gets blamed.
