I'm about 240 lbs and for the last few months I've been waking up with a lower back that feels like it's been used as a trampoline by a small elephant. I'm on a 3-year-old memory foam mattress that felt great in the store but now seems to have a permanent crater where I sleep. Anyone else deal with this? Not sure if it's the mattress or just me getting old.
Anyone else wake up with a sore lower back
Memory foam is the worst for heavier folks after a while. It breaks down way faster than latex or coils. Your crater is basically a custom mold of your body at this point. How firm was the the original?
Sore lower back every single morning. I'm around 260. I went to a mattress store and the guy kept pointing me to the $3000 hybrid. I walked out. Following this thread for actual advice.
Could also be your pillow situation? If my pillow is too flat my lower back acts up weirdly. Not saying it's not the mattress but worth checking.
Pillow affecting lower back is a stretch. It's the mattress sagging. OP, flip it if you can, but if it's a crater that won't help. Time for coils or a latex hybrid.
Have you tried sleeping on the floor? Free and builds character. Seriously though, I'm ~220 and a firm pocket coil with a thin latex topper fixed my morning back pain. Memory foam was a nightmare after month 8.
Floor is a no from me. My hips would file a complaint. But the pocket coil + latex topper idea keeps coming up. What firmness though?
I flipped it last week and it's slightly better but I can still feel the dip. I'm leaning toward a hybrid now. @GravyBoatCaptain let me know if you find one that doesn't cost a used car.
I stand corrected on the pillow thing. But also—are you a back sleeper or side? That changes the firmness rec a loot. Side sleeper on a too-firm coil can wreck your shoulders instead.
Side sleeper here. Medium-firm hybrid with zoned support. The zones matter more than the brand, honestly. My last mattress was cheap and it still held up two years because the coils were decent gauge
