I'm about 280 lbs and I've gone through three mattresses in six years. They all start sagging around the 18-month mark. I rotate them, use a protector, and don't jump on the bed. Is there actually a mattress out there that will hold up longer than five years for someone my size, or is this just a fantasy? I'm tired of spending $1k+ every couple years. Any real experiences would be appreciated, not looking for mattress company marketing fluff.
Anyone found a mattress that lasts more than five years
I feel your pain. 6'4" 320 here. I had a Tempurpedic that lasted about 4 years before it got a petmanent body impression. Customer service said it was 'normal wear.' Switched to a Sleep Number and its been 3 years with no sagging, but it's not the most comfortable for side sleeping. Following this thread.
Have you tried sleeping on the floor? Works great for my back and my wallet. But seriously, maybe look into latex mattresses? They're supposed to be denser and more durable. No personal experience though.
Latex is the way to go for heavy folks. im 250 and my Dunlop latex mattress is going on 7 years with zero sag. It's firm but supportive. Just make sure you get a high-density core, at least 6 inches of latex. Also, a solid platform bed frame helps a lot.
I'm not a heavy sleeper but my husband is around 300 lbs. We got a Stearns & Foster a few years years back aand it's holding up okay, but it's only been 3 years. I'm curious about the latex suggestion too. How does it feel for side sleepers? He's a stomach sleeper.
OP, check if the mattress has a warranty tlhat covers sagging. Most major brands replace if it sags more than 1.5 inches. But they often prorate it. Also, a mattress topper can help extend the life if you're not ready to replace yet.
Thanks for the replies so far. I've considered latex but worried about the price. And the warranty thing—I tried that with my last mattress but they said the sag wasn't deep enough. I'll look into the high-density latex core. Any specific brands that don't break the bank
I've had good luck with a pocket coil mattress with a dense foam base. It's been 5 years and still going strong. I weigh 270. The key is to avoid memory foam top layers that break down quickly. Go for something with a strong coil support system.
Just buy a new mattress every 2 years and stop complaining. That's what the industry wants anyway. 😂 But seriously, good luck. I'm still on my $200 IKEA mattress and it's fine, but I'm only 150 lbs.
For budget latex, check out Sleep On Latex or Turmerry. They're not super cheap but better than the big names. Also, make sure you get a mattress with a zippered cover so you can inspect the layers for breakdown. And dont forget a good foundation—a slatted bed frame with close spacing is crucial.
Thanks GravityGuru, I'll look into those. My husband's birthday is coming up and a new mattress might be his gift. He's been complaining about his back lately. But we might need to save up for a latex one.
